The Visual and Autonomous Exploration Systems Research Laboratory pursues trans-disciplinary, collaborative, and synergistic systems engineering in the areas of “smart” service systems, autonomous (space) exploration systems, human/brain-machine interfaces, and biomedical engineering for healthcare. This system-of-systems approach has focused the lab’s research programs on “smart” service systems, such as: autonomous and cognitive/reasoning systems, vision prostheses for the blind, smart ophthalmic platforms for mobile- and tele-health, ophthalmic instruments and tests, self-adapting wearable sensors, and computer-optimized design. The lab has received numerous awards, e.g., the R&D Magazine’s R&D 100 Award and R&D 100 Editors’ Choice Award in 2009, both for the DOE-funded “Artificial Retina” project. Moreover, the lab’s research has resulted currently in two startup companies in the opthalmic market and has been documented in numerous publications and patents in the areas of autonomous systems, biomedical devices, neural stimulation, MEMS fabrication, data fusion and analysis, and multi-dimensional optimization.
